Timothy, although more commonly used for hay production for horses and livestock, can be a great addition to a wildlife game plot. Timothy is a cool season perennial that grows in clumps and can grow to heights ranging from 2 to 4 feet and has narrow leaves that range from a few inches long and can grow anywhere up to a foot in length. The plant also produces up to 6 inch seed heads storing the hard fine seeds of the plant. Timothy is an excellent companion to alfalfas and clovers due to the fact that it is not very competitive with them. By planting the timothy with clover and alfalfa the deer will come into stand and eat the clovers and alfalfas first leaving the timothy standing however game animals such as deer and elk as well as smaller animals like rabbits and other rodents will graze on the timothy plants. Timothy is very palatable to elk and deer and both can be found grazing timothy throughout the summer months. Aside from a big and small game needs and uses timothy is also great for waterfowl and upland game birds like quail, pheasant, and grouse. This is due to the fine hard seed the timothy plant produces which is an excellent food source to draw birds into the plot. Another reason that it is the plant produces great nesting material and habitat for which is excellent for brood rearing and cover which is important for setting up bird habitats because it promotes chick survive and population growth as well as provides and escape area where birds can retreat to when feeling pressured or threatened. The 2 to 4 foot height range of the timothy also provides great bedding area for deer. When planting with clover and alfalfas the deer and elk will come to the plot to graze on the alfalfas and clovers leaving the timothy standing they may even bed down in the plot while grazing. This is good during the closed hunting seasons as it will allow the deer to become comfortable bedding in the timothy cover and allows for travel patterns to be created by placing addition food sources in other areas to draw the animals out of cover increasing the chance of a successful hunt.
